We actively encourage support and input from members of our community. As a volunteer you will play a significant role in our success and are vital for our future. Whether you donate your time once a month, or regularly each week, there’s bound to be a way for you to get involved in our volunteer workforce.
Volunteers come from all walks of life and there are different roles available depending on your skills, experience, availability and fitness. Some volunteer roles are available throughout the year while others are seasonal. You must be over 15 years of age to apply and acceptance is dependent upon a satisfactory police check.

Roles currently available:
- Information Centre Counter Team Member (Needed for Friday, Saturday and Sunday) – If you enjoy interacting with people then this role will appeal. We are looking for people to help out at our counter from 10:30am to 1pm. Experience of working in a shop will be an advantage. You will learn to greet our visitors and go through the map of our site with them and shall be operating our till for admissions and purchases in the shop.
- Events and Promotions Team Member – Do you enjoy speaking with members of the public and sharing your knowledge? In this role you will enjoy learning about the history of our site and gain an understanding of the many ways that members of the public can experience Ngā Manu. You will assist our Administration and Marketing Officer with promotions and events at Ngā Manu and off site. This role would suit those with experience in customer service, hospitality or retail. Events and promotions take place at weekends and during school holidays.
- Garden and Track Crew Member – Are you passionate about the preservation of local wildlife and conservation? Do you enjoy working outdoors and getting your hands dirty? Then this could be the role for you! We are looking for people to join our garden and track crew at our beautiful reserve. The role involves weeding, pruning, mulching, and track maintenance and development. You need a basic understanding and knowledge of plants and a good level of fitness. 3 to 4 hours per week on a Monday or Tuesday.
- Construction Project Team Member – Would you like to put your practical skills to use by getting involved with various projects on our beautiful reserve? We are looking for Project Team Members to help with small to medium construction projects, landscaping, aviary refurbishment and track construction. If you possess a broad range of practical skills and would like to work in a beautiful environment then this could be the role for you! Basic carpentry or trade skills would be an advantage but not essential. 5 to 10 hours weekly on Tuesday and/or Thursday.
- Volunteer Guide Team Member – If you possess a passion for conservation, nature and wildlife, have a good knowledge of native flora and fauna and enjoy interacting with people and telling stories, then guiding may be for you! We would particularly like to hear from people who are available on weekends and public holidays to help out with Ngā Manu’s free guided tours of the native forest which start at 2:15pm.
